How Invisalign Straightens Teeth

Most folks who have either had braces or who are considering braces take one look at Invisalign and wonder “How on Earth can that possibly work?” Allow us to break down the process for you so you can better understand how this teeth-straightening system gently moves your chompers into place to give you the most beautiful smile possible.

The process of using the Invisalign system begins with creating 3-D computer-generated images of your teeth and gums and then using the scans to develop a series of custom “aligners.” The first clear tray you place over your teeth will look very much like your current dental alignment, and some folks may not be able to really see any differences. There actually are some slight modifications though, and the aligner doesn’t line up exactly with your teeth, but rather applies gentle pressure to start moving them in the necessary direction to begin the straightening process.

Each subsequent aligner after the first set follows the same process, slowly moving your teeth to the proper position in the mouth in incremental steps. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks, and an average patient will go through anywhere from 18 to 30 separate trays over the course of treatment. Altogether, treatment normally lasts for roughly a year, but that can vary on a case-by-case basis.

So ultimately the basic concept behind Invisalign is the same as with traditional braces, just with a different delivery method. Rather than relying on metal brackets or poky wires Invisalign users can enjoy a clear, barely noticeable alignment device which can also be easily removed for eating, brushing or when you just really need a break. Of course this treatment isn’t right for everyone, but if you’re considering cosmetic orthodontia then please make sure and come and let us provide you with a consultation. Together we’ll find the perfect way to make sure you have the nicest smile possible.
